President Trump recently announced an escalating tariff schedule to get Mexico to fall in line on immigration.
Unfortunately, Trump’s plan of attack on Mexico is about to get derailed by the Republican-controlled Senate.
Senate Majority Mitch McConnell (R-KY), after holding meetings for most of the day, stated, “there is not much support in my conference for tariffs, that’s for sure.”
Losing Support
While Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) has been very vocal for his support of the tariffs, dissenters in the party are now taking over the narrative.
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) stated, “The administration ought to be concerned about another vote of disapproval on another national emergency act, this time trying to implement tariffs.
“Tariffs are not real popular in the Republican Conference.”
In all, it is estimated that close to two dozen Republican Senators are against Trump implementing the tariffs against Mexico.
Avocados Win
Our politicians have had two years under this administration to fix immigration and they have not even begun to crack the seal on it.
We have thousands of people every day trying to get in along the southern border, yet we still don’t have any legislation to address the issue.
Since Congress has done nothing, Trump stepped up.
Most of those truly concerned about the immigration crisis realize that short-term consequences of tariffs are very real but also necessary to get the long-term goal completed, which is getting immigration under control.
While the Senate can say all it wants about tariffs not being effective, the announcement of the tariffs did bring Mexico to send a delegation to negotiate.
Now that we have their attention, you would think Congressional Republicans would show strength to support the President, but they seem more worried if they will be able to get avocado dip at Chipotle.
Publicly, at least among conservatives, the support for tariffs has been overwhelming, at least from what we can see on social media.
Our senators better get in line and support the President because that is what We the People are asking them to do.
If not, they better be prepared to have a legitimate alternative or dig in for a big fight when their seat comes back up for re-election.
