Trump Administration Puts Federal Agency on Chopping Block

One of the platform issues by Trump during his campaign was to cut down on wasteful government spending.

His plan to do this was by negotiating better deals and to “trim the fat” of excessive government spending.

The Office of Personnel Management may soon cease to exist as part of the fat trimming.

Reorganizing the Government

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is basically the human resource office for government employees.

According to reports, the agency could end being shut down as early as October 1, with employees being sent home, then officially laid off 30 days later.

The Trump administration has slowly been moving duties away from the office to make it expendable.

The most recent of these moves was to put the role security clearances in the hands of the Department of Defense, which took significant funding away from the agency and put it in a financial bind.

One source told Fox News, “As the Administration has shared publicly on many occasions, the Congressionally mandated move of background investigations to DOD leaves OPM with a major funding shortfall.

“We continue to work with Congress to find a solution and sustainable path forward that avoids unacceptable impacts to the staff at OPM.

“Unfortunately, issues of funding and appropriations law leave OPM with few options.

“It is our sincere hope that Congress helps us find a way to address the funding gap created by their decision to move a major funding source away from OPM.”

Democrats Blocking

I know this may come as a shock, but Democrats in the House are already putting a plan in place to block the measure.

A bill by the House Appropriations Committee is in the works that would prevent government funds to be used to “reorganize or transfer any function” of the agency.

Trump has requested $50 million for that exact purpose.

If the agency is eliminated and its duties sourced out to existing departments, the elimination of the agency could save taxpayers as much as $37 million per year in operating costs.
