Inspector General Report on James Comey Publicly Released

The report referred to the DOJ on James Comey is now public knowledge and it does not paint a pretty picture for the former FBI Director.

Among other criticisms, the report stated that Comey set a “dangerous example” by drafting, leaking, and retaining memos regarding private presidential conversations.

Safeguarding Information

As the director of one of the top law enforcement agencies in the country, there are standards James Comey needed to meet.

According to the IG report, however, he fell way short.

The report stated, “By not safeguarding sensitive information obtained during the course of his FBI employment, and by using it to create public pressure for official action, Comey set a dangerous example for the over 35,000 current FBI employees—and the many thousands more former FBI employees—who similarly have access to or knowledge of non-public information.”

While the report is less than flattering, the DOJ has declined to prosecute Comey, as was announced several weeks ago.

Most pundits agree this was the right decision due to the fact the memos were not marked classified when they were released.

Nonetheless, the DOJ included the release of these memos among the violations conducted by Comey when he was in office.

The report stated that Comey had violated his employment agreement “by providing one of the unclassified memos that contained official FBI information, including sensitive investigative information, to his friend with instructions for the friend to share the contents of the memo with a reporter.”

Comey also violated policy by keeping copies of some of the memos in his personal safe at home without notifying the FBI he had done so.

The IG also ripped Comey on the method he chose to use so a special counsel would be convened.

The report stated, “Comey had several other lawful options available to him to advocate for the appointment of a Special Counsel, which he told us was his goal in making the disclosure.

“What was not permitted was the unauthorized disclosure of sensitive investigative information, obtained during the course of FBI employment, in order to achieve a personally desired outcome.”

While Comey was not indicted through this report, he is far from out of the woods just yet.

He will now have to deal with the black marks this report adds to his boy scout image and there are still three other investigations that are ongoing that could present a much larger challenge for Comey.

The most problematic of these will more than likely be the FISA warrants signed by Comey to spy on Trump associates during the election.
