Decorated Army Veteran, Police Officer Vying for Rep. Omar’s Congressional Seat

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn) has another challenger for her seat in Congress and this one may present her with some real problems.

Chris Kelley, who is an Army veteran as well as a 20-year veteran of the Minneapolis Police Force, has announced he is running for Omar’s House seat.

Accomplished Public Servant

It goes without saying, Omar’s comments about 9/11 struck a special chord with Kelley.

As an Army veteran who has seen the horrors of terrorism first hand, he knows it was not just “some people did something.”

As a police officer, he knows the loss of his fellow brother and sister first responders that gave their life that day and continue to suffer from medical issues from the cleanup.

Kelley stated, “September 11 was a terrible loss of life, not just for police officers and firefighters and other first responders, but 3,000 people and non-combatants died, and to be dismissive of that was an outrage.

“I could sit and complain or I could do something about it.

“And I believe I can be a positive voice in standing up for people in our country, and for our first responders and the people every day on the frontlines.”

Kelley, who plans on running as an independent, also stated he is not exactly pleased with the fact Omar spends more time developing her brand than she does representing the people of her district.

He stated, “As former military, I am here to serve and not further my status.

“I want to do a good job for the people I represent and I don’t have a personal agenda.

“I’m passionate about service and I just want to be able to continue that.”

Kelley has a mixed platform, so the Independent status makes perfect sense for him.

While he has strong beliefs in having a secure border, he stated he would also like to see a pathway to citizenship for the DACA recipients.

He stated, “But I would also like to see a pathway to citizenship for those under DACA; they couldn’t help they were brought here and need a shot to be able to stay here.”

While it is obviously very early, he does indeed look like a very formidable opponent for Omar.
