If you live in a state with a Democrat governor or a city with a Democrat mayor, with few exceptions, you can expect to be dug in for the foreseeable future.
While there are some exceptions, such as Colorado Governor Polis, many Democrat governors (and some Democrats at the local level) now seemed dead set on keeping lockdown orders in place until a vaccine and/or treatment are found for COVID-19.
Refusing to Open
While the federal government has provided guidelines for a safe reopening and offered any support states need to proceed safely, there is a growing movement among Democrat governors to keep their states closed.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was among the first to extend her lockdown.
Whitmer has already stated that sporting events and the like will not take place until rigorous testing or a vaccine is available.
She stated, “We need a vaccine, and we need to have mass quantities available.
“Or we need to be able to test and be able to acknowledge that we’ve got some immunity that’s built up.
“We’re not there yet and until that happens I think all the organizers of these leagues understand how important it is that we act responsibly here.”
In LA County, the decision has already been made to stay in lockdown through July, essentially ensuring local business owners who depend on summer tourists that they will go out of business.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, on Monday, is now taking the same approach, stating, “You, too, should expect to continue with this for the foreseeable future.
“Until either a proven vaccine is in our midst or proven therapeutics are widely available, we cannot firmly enter the new normal, which eventually awaits us when life will once again return to all of our workplaces, downtowns and main streets.
“Most importantly, we will continue to be guided by the principle that public health creates economic health. And if we begin to see a backslide in public health, we will have to also pull back on the reins of our restart.”
I lived at a shore point for almost a decade (Sea Isle City, NJ), so I know how important it is for these business owners to get their doors opened for the summer, but now it appears they will probably lose the entire tourist season, which will turn most of these towns into ghost towns in terms of businesses operating in them.
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker can also be added to that list, stating, “I know that we all have a passionate desire to return to the sense of normalcy that we felt before the world knew of COVID-19.
“Here’s the truth. And I don’t like it any more than you do.
“Until we have a vaccine, or an effective treatment, or enough widespread immunity that new cases fail to materialize, the option of returning to normalcy doesn’t exist.”
The decision of just these few governors means no major sports, no concerts, no festivals, and no tourist business, not just for their states, but in some cases, for the entire country.
If we have a handful of states that host major sports teams refusing to open, the entire league is going to be held hostage.
Dr. Fauci is hopeful we will have a treatment later this year and a vaccine shortly thereafter, however, even if a treatment and/or vaccine is released later this year or early next year, we are talking about millions of workers and tens of thousands of business owners that will be out of work or have their doors closed for almost a full year.
