Sooner or later, we all knew Jared Kushner’s security clearance would come back to haunt Trump.
Well, that time is now, as whistleblower Tricia Newbold has claimed the White House overruled at least 25 security clearance denials.
Tricia Newbold has worked for the government for almost two decades.
During that time, she stated she never had a disciplinary problem.
Newbold contends that all started to change after she flagged almost two dozen applications for a security clearance.
Eventually, those flagged applications were passed through, with President Trump overriding the denials.
Newbold’s allegations have come about due to a complaint she had filed against her supervisor, Carl Kline.
Kline, who served as a security director at the White House for two years, currently works at the Pentagon.
The Smoking Gun
Democrats have been digging and digging to get something on Trump.
Newbold’s complaint gave them that opportunity.
Republicans are obviously not happy with that they consider to be a sneak attack by the Democrats.
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), stated it was “extremely unfortunate and disappointing” Rep. Cummings (D-MD) was “using this sensitive topic as a pretense for a partisan attack on the White House.”
Jordan also stated that Cummings had “cherry-picked excerpts” of Newbold’s testimony to make things look far worse than they really are.
No big surprise, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff has already stated the committee will support the investigation.
We all know Schiff loves a good conspiracy theory.
After wasting two years and $25 million on the last one, why not have another?!
Of note here is that the President is well within his rights to override a security clearance denial.
Having said that, having to explain why more than two dozen denials were overridden is going to be a tall task for the administration if the denials were made for legitimate security concerns and not something that can be explained away.
This is not something that will cripple Trump, however, it will give his opponent during the 2020 election some ammunition to use against him, especially considering how vocal Trump was over the Hillary email security investigation.
