DOJ Backs Treasury on Denying House Request

President Trump must be thoroughly enjoying the fact he finally has administration officials willing to uphold the law and not cave to Democrat pressure.

The Department of Justice, on Friday, backed Treasury Secretary’s Mnuchin’s decision to refuse to grant access to President Trump’s tax returns to the House Ways and Means Committee.

Overreaching Power

Ever since Democrats took over the House, they have been abusing their power to launch investigations as well as trying to obtain documentation to which they have no right.

This all started once the Mueller report was published.

Several House committees demanding they see the supporting documentation, including grand jury testimony.

The only problem is that material as well as some other classified information goes beyond their reach.

That did not stop Democrats, however, as they issued subpoena after subpoena to get information that would have required the Attorney General to break the law to obey them.

Bogus Request

Included in this effort was a request by the House Ways and Means Committee to get Trump’s tax returns.

Committee Chairman Richard Neal is using a smoke screen to try to get his hands on them, which was recognized by Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, who directed the IRS to leave those returns in the cabinet.

According to Neal, they needed to see the President’s tax returns to possibly create new legislation.

Assistant Attorney General Steven Engel called the approach both “unprecedented” and a “serious risk of abuse.”

Engel stated, “(The) Committee’s stated purpose . . . blinks reality.

“It’s pretextual.

“No one could reasonably believe that the Committee seeks six years of President Trump’s tax returns because of a newly discovered interest in legislating on the presidential-audit process.

“Recognizing that the Committee may not pursue exposure for exposure’s sake, however, the Committee has devised an alternative reason for the request.

“Where, as here, there is reason to doubt the Committee’s asserted legislative purpose, Treasury may examine the objective fit between that purpose and the information sought, as well as any other evidence that may bear upon the Committee’s true objective.”

This is a big win for Trump and one he direly needs if he is going to be able to fend off this endless slew of attacks from Democrats.
