Harris Casts Tie-breaking Vote to Move COVID Relief Package Forward in Senate

The Senate losses in Georgia are now coming back to haunt us.

Had we just won one of those seats, we would not even be making this report.

Due to the 50-50 Senate tie, however, Harris was able to move the debate for Biden’s COVID-19 package forward by casting the 51st vote to advance discussions.

Ram It Through

Our government was set up to implore that both sides work together to find compromise when crafting legislation.

That “hope” by our Founding Fathers was abandoned long ago when politicians figured out ways to skirt the rules.

One such measure was reconciliation, where the traditional 60 votes are abandoned in favor of a simple majority.

When the seats are even, the vice president can cast a tie-breaker vote to ram through the legislation, and that is exactly what Harris did.

Republicans will use some delay tactics, such as Senator Johnson (R-WI) reading the entire 628-page document, but as long as Democrats can get their moderates on board, Republicans can not stop this bill from going through.
