Every election year, some Democrat decides that reparations are the golden ticket to winning the election.
During this cycle, Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, and Julian Castro have all bought in that they support reparations.
Numerous other candidates, such as Beto O’Rourke and Cory Booker, have also mentioned the issue on the campaign trail.
The bad news for Dems, though, is that the majority of Americans will not support paying out trillions of dollars to descendants of slaves.
Bad Polling Numbers
When you are hanging your hat on one issue like this and Americans by-and-large don’t support it, you are all but doomed to failure.
That is exactly what at least two major contenders have done though.
Warren and Harris would be well-advised to check the numbers both now and historically on candidates that even start throwing the term “reparation” around during an election.
A recent Fox News poll stated that 60 percent of Americans did NOT support reparations.
A Rasmussen poll had even worse results, with only 21 percent of the public likely to vote for a candidate that is in favor of the big payout.
Among Democrats, a full third of the voters would not even consider a candidate that supported paying reparations.
The numbers were pretty similar in 2016, with a Data For Progress poll showing only 21 percent of the country would favor voting for a candidate in favor or reparations.
Buying Votes
This issue should be a dead one.
Maybe it makes me heartless, but I don’t believe the people of today should be taking on the burden for something that happened so long ago.
Furthermore, a significant portion of this population had zero ties to that part of this country’s history.
Take me for example.
I am only second generation Irish whose ancestors came over here to work off their debt in order to be able to live here.
Why should my tax dollars go for reparations?
This is nothing more than Democrat candidates putting a price tag on a vote.
If a candidate walks into a room and tells everyone they are going to get a check for $50,000 if that person wins the election, who else are they going to vote for?
I don’t fault the minority community for buying in on this, but I do fault the fact that in a society where there is ample opportunity for everyone, this is still an issue.
Democrats will never learn, though, that for every single vote you secure in this fashion, you turn nine more against you.
Warren has been making a big surge, but this issue could take her down.
As far as Harris goes, she simply cannot afford to have anything negative in her campaign right now because she is dropping like a stone.
Let them keep selling these reparations, though, because ultimately, it will be at the demise of their presidential hopes.
