McConnell Reveals How Senate Will Deal with House DREAMer Legislation

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was not exactly thrilled to see the House pass legislation to offer amnesty for millions of illegals.

When asked how the Senate would deal with the legislation, McConnell said they would “probably not” vote on the legislation.

Need More

While McConnell’s reasoning for not putting the legislation on the floor of the Senate is sound, it could be a major mistake.

He stated, “The Dreamers have a sympathetic case.

“There are circumstances under which I and others would be happy to support that.

“But we need to do more than that.

“You know there’s some genuine fixes on the legal immigration side and on the illegal immigration side that need to be addressed.

“There is a perfectly legitimate case for the Dreamers … but I think we need to do more than just that. And that’s the context in which I would deal with that issue in the Senate.”

When the House passed the legislation, we stated there was no way the Senate should consider this without getting something in return.

However, what we would have preferred to see is the Senate vote on the legislation knowing it would not pass through the Senate.

Now, McConnell is just providing the House with more fodder to use against the Republican party in that he is not even considering their legislation.

McConnell should put this on the floor for debate, then shred it during that process.

Additionally, let it go to vote and get everyone on the record in terms of supporting it or wanting more significant reform to immigration.

The American people need to know where their elected representatives stand on this issue.

The only reason McConnell could possibly have for not putting this up for vote is that he fears enough Republicans will support it that it will pass.

At this point, though, he cannot sit idly by and just do nothing.

If he is not going to put this up for vote, the Senate needs to come up with immigration reform legislation to counter this proposal.

The new DREAM Act gives them plenty of insight as to what Democrats want in order to get immigration legislation passed, so use that as a starting point to pen legislation that both parties can get behind.
