President Trump made a late-afternoon announcement on Thursday to remedy the illegal immigration problem and it has sent Mexican leadership scrambling.
Trump has proposed a five percent tariff on all goods coming in from Mexico until illegal immigration is halted.
Additionally, the tariff will escalate the longer the problem continues.
Action Must Be Taken
The measure by Trump may be viewed as extreme by some, but with the massive influx of illegals and asylum seekers overwhelming our border, something drastic needed to be done.
President Trump is asking Mexico for a concentrated effort to lessen the flow of illegals to our border.
President Trump stated, “If Mexico still has not taken action to dramatically reduce or eliminate the number of illegal aliens crossing its territory into the United States, Tariffs will be increased to 15 percent on August 1, 2019, to 20 percent on September 1, 2019, and to 25 percent on October 1, 2019.
“Tariffs will permanently remain at the 25 percent level unless and until Mexico stops the illegal inflow of aliens coming through its territory.”
Panic Mode
Up until now, Mexico has more or less been willing to sit on the sidelines and allow this problem to continue.
There have been no repercussions, so why bother.
That changed dramatically on Thursday night and Mexican leadership immediately responded.
Mexican President Andrew Manuel Lopez Obrador immediately sent a delegation to the United States in an effort to work out some type of a deal with the administration.
This is quite different from previous posturing when Mexico thought Trump was bluffing.
Even so, Obrador did release a statement touting the fact the United States is a nation of immigrants and that “the Statue of Liberty is not an empty symbol.”
He is right, it is not an empty symbol and this county is a nation of immigrants, but it is of immigrants that come into this country legally.
Personally, I am sick and tired of foreign leaders forgetting the legal part, as do Democrats on far too many occasions.
Anyone advocating for illegal immigrants is advocating on the part of criminals knowingly breaking the law.
It is even more infuriating when a foreign leader gets on the soapbox to tell us who we should be welcoming into this country.
Mexico sounds worried and it should be.
Tariffs like this will cripple Mexico’s economy, as that country is far more reliant on us than we are of it.
Finally, they have no choice but to come to the table and offer a real solution to address this problem before it ever gets to our border.
Support in the party has been mixed, with Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) leading the opposition.
Standing behind the President is Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C), which leads me to believe this measure was discussed with Graham before it was ever invoked.
The President has our complete support and we are glad someone is finally showing some backbone in an effort to deal with this crisis at our southern border.
