House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Undermines Potential Trump-Backed U.S.-U.K. Trade Deal

President Trump is a firm supporter of BREXIT, while Democrats have been adamantly against it.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) significantly undermined Trump’s efforts to put a bilateral trade agreement in place with the U.K. by saying if BREXIT hurts the 1998 Irish peace accords, the deal will have “no chance” in the House.

No Trade Agreement

When the BREXIT vote was on the table, then-President Obama and then-Presidential candidate Donald Trump could not have been further apart.

Obama was very adamant he thought BREXIT would be bad for the people of Britain.

At the same time, Donald Trump applauded the measure and openly supported it in public.

His support of BREXIT actually garnered him some very favorable opinions across the pond, as some BREXIT supporters donned a MAGA cap in support of Trump.

Since the vote, Trump has been very excited about the possibility of establishing a “large scale trade deal with the United Kingdom.”

He is on record on several occasions stated that he thinks a deal with the U.K. has limitless potential.

Nancy Pelosi, however, sees things far differently.

Pelosi stated, “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, we must ensure that nothing happens in BREXIT discussions that imperils the Good Friday accord – including, but not limited to, the seamless border between the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland.

“Let me be clear: if the BREXIT deal undermines the Good Friday accords, there will be no chance of a U.S.-U.K. trade agreement.”

Pelosi made this statement as part of a U.S. delegation visiting the U.K.

New Trade Agreement

A new trade agreement with an independent Britain would be a legacy accomplishment for Trump.

John Bolton, National Security Adviser, stated, “It’s very complicated inside Britain.

“I know they’re going through a lot of turmoil.

“But really I think the president would like to reassure the people of the United Kingdom how strongly we feel, that we want to be there when they do come out of the European Union.”

A major trade deal would surely play a major role in making BREXIT a success, which is why Pelosi is so much against it.

This was not lost on British lawmakers that are part of the pro-Brexit European Research Group (ERG).

Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-PA) who is part of the delegation, said most British lawmakers appreciate the support offered by Pelosi, except, of course, the lawmakers that mattered.

He stated, “The one exception clearly was the ERG who never explicitly accused us of taking sides but, as they expressed it, it is clear that their world view is that the Border issue is ‘concocted’ and that it is really being used by Remainers in London, Brussels, Dublin, and Washington all in some sort of grand conspiracy to force them to do something they don’t want to do.”

Pelosi’s stance is nothing more than a reinforcement of President Obama’s threat to Britain that it would be moved to the “back of the queue” if they voted in favor of BREXIT.

Surely, it is only a matter of time now before Trump unleashes on Pelosi and her fellow Democrats over her hardline stance on a possible trade agreement.
