House Democrats issued requests for six years of Donald Trump’s tax returns.
On Monday, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told them, “I am informing you now that the Department may not lawfully fulfill the Committee’s request.”
The Tax Obsession
Democrats have been trying to get ahold of Trump’s taxes for about three years now.
This all started during the Republican primary when Trump said he would release them but was waiting for an audit to be concluded.
The issue continued through the general election, which is where Trump finally dug in and said he would not be turning them over.
With the 2020 campaign season at full throttle, Trump’s taxes are becoming a big issue for Democrats again, but now they are weaponizing their respective committees to get what they want.
In this case, it is the House Ways and Means Committee issuing the request for Trump’s returns.
Now, it appears as though Rep. Neal, the chairman of the committee, could issue subpoenas to accompany his formal request.
Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) stated, “On a day when his former fixer heads to jail and his current fixer head the Department of Justice, President Trump obstructs both Mueller and his tax returns from speaking for themselves.”
Democrats say they need the returns to “conduct oversight of the IRS’s presidential audit program,” but the Trump administration rightfully believes they are up to something far more nefarious.
The End Game
Democrats want these taxes for one reason and one reason only, to give the Democrat candidate for president ammunition to use against Trump.
They are hoping to find out Trump paid a lower tax rate or used tax loopholes to avoid paying what they deem to be his “fair share” of taxes.
For the record, Trump reportedly gets audited almost every year and as far as we know, has never been hit for penalties by the IRS.
In their eyes, however, if they can do that, they can hit him for the tax breaks that were put out by Republicans as self-serving.
They are literally weaponizing their power to take out a presidential candidate.
This battle will likely not end anytime soon and due to the sheer quantity of investigations being launched and subpoenas being issued against Trump and administration officials, this will more than likely land in front of the Supreme Court at some point.
In the meantime, Trump continues to make Democrats look like spoiled children upset because they lost a game.
They are inventing ways to attack Trump and by all accounts, the American people are getting fed up with it.
