Friday was Michelle Obama’s 56th birthday.
Friday was also the day the Trump administration decided to shred her legacy lunch meal program, with many pundits calling it an absolutely savage move by the administration.
Too Much Waste
When Michelle Obama was our First Lady, revamping the school lunch program was one of her legacy programs.
While the liberal media loved everything she did, the fact of the matter was the kids were not eating the meals.
When reports were done at the schools, they literally showed trash cans packed with untouched food.
Everyone wants our children to be healthier, as obesity rates are absurd, but the overhaul needs to be both healthy and appetizing for the children, or we are just flushing more money down the drain.
In announcing the rollback of Michelle Obama’s plan, the USDA stated the new proposal would give “school nutrition professionals … more flexibility to serve appetizing and healthy meals that appeal to their students’ preferences and subsequently reduce food waste.
“The proposed rule also encourages state and local operators to focus resources on feeding children rather than administrative paperwork.”
“Schools and school districts continue to tell us that there is still too much food waste and that more common-sense flexibility is needed to provide students nutritious and appetizing meals.”
“We listened and now we’re getting to work,” U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue stated.
“Our proposed changes empower schools to give their very best to our children nationwide and have the potential to benefit nearly 100,000 schools and institutions that feed 30 million children each school day through USDA’s school meal programs.
“Providing children with wholesome, nutritious food is part of our motto at USDA, which is to ‘do right and feed everyone.’”
The Fake News
I have already seen reports that kids will now be eating pizza and burgers every day, but that is not going to be the case.
One of the key aspects of the new proposals is to offer a wider array of healthy options, such as more fruit and vegetable choices, so the meals appeal to more children.
They are also looking at custom menus based on age groups to really narrow down foods that are more attractive to children in each demographic while still offering them plenty of healthy options.
Democrats also added to the narrative by blasting the administration as being petty for using this particular day to make these announcements about the program.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) stated, “Egregious. The Occupant is trying to play petty with the food our babies eat.
“Add it to the list affirming that cruelty is the point with this White House.”
Sadly, she reacted before seeing the actual details of the new proposals, which are clearly aimed at not only giving our children healthier options but also making sure they actually put that food into their bellies.
And if you really want to fix the obesity problem, how about disallowing food stamps to be used on junk food and processed food, which we see happen far too much with parents on public assistance programs.
God forbid, parents actually take accountability for what their children are eating as well as making smart decisions on the food they purchase and keep in their own homes.
