Trump Sets Off Global Battle by Cutting W.H.O. Funding

The World Health Organization has been under fire for possibly helping China coverup the true severity of the coronavirus.

Last week, President Trump threatened to cut off the W.H.O. and now he has done it, creating a massive global battle and pushback from many of our allies.

No More Funding

Most members of the United Nations have supported the W.H.O. throughout this process even though it has become painfully clear that the W.H.O. helped China suppress information about the coronavirus.

Had we been given the proper information from the outset, some believe the virus could have possibly been limited to just China and not become a global pandemic.

Trump accused the agency of choosing “political correctness over lifesaving measures.”

Republicans have been critical of the organization throughout this process, so this move was widely applauded by Trump’s allies.

Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) was among the first to congratulate Trump on this latest move…

Democrats, as expected, went ballistic.

Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) in conjunction with Rep. Steven Lynch (D-MA) stated, “While we may agree that the WHO has shortcomings that must be corrected, your attack on the global health organization can easily be seen as a deliberate but transparent effort to deflect responsibility for your own failures onto others.

Adding that Trump’s “attempt to blame the WHO for trusting China reflects an astonishing level of hypocrisy given your own fawning and widely publicized praise of President Xi Jinping and his government for their handling of this crisis.

“While the WHO may have made mistakes in its response to this crisis, it was certainly not alone, and it defies logic to withhold support from the WHO at this pivotal moment—at the height of a global pandemic—when promoting the health of nations around the world is essential to protecting our own population and rebuilding our own economy.”

The European Union said that there was “no reason” to halt funding to the W.H.O.

United Nations’ Secretary-General António Guterres stated, “It is my belief that the World Health Organization must be supported, as it is absolutely critical to the world’s efforts to win the war against COVID-19.

“It also not the time to reduce the resources for the operations of the World Health Organization or any other humanitarian organization in the fight against the virus.

“Once we have finally turned the page on this epidemic, there must be a time to look back fully to understand how such a disease emerged and spread its devastation so quickly across the globe, and how all those involved reacted to the crisis.

“The lessons learned will be essential to effectively address similar challenges, as they may arise in the future.”

Had the W.H.O. called out China from the beginning for its deception, this would not be happening, but the organization has been complicit in this coverup, often celebrating China and its efforts to battle the virus rather than calling the country out for deceiving the world as to its seriousness.

A recent AP investigation found that China held back by at least a week, but many believe it went back much further than that.

This is a move that will play well to Trump’s base and beyond. People are furious over losing their jobs, their businesses, and their retirement funds right now and they are all looking for someone to blame.

Trump may have just provided that target to them with this unprecedented move.
