Well, nobody will be able to accuse Attorney General Barr of not having a sense of humor.
While attending a Capitol Hill event, AG Barr reportedly walked up to Nancy Pelosi and asked her, “Did you bring your handcuffs?”
Inherent Contempt
Barr’s comment was obviously made in reference to the rumors some House members want Barr held in inherent contempt.
If the House follows through, Barr could literally be arrested by the House Sergeant-at-Arms, cuffed, and brought before the House to answer their questions.
He could legally be held until he agrees to answer any and all questions the House members have for him.
This is something that has not been acted upon since the 1930s and is something Pelosi seems a little hesitant to pull the trigger on.
Inherent contempt was first mentioned by chickenman, Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN).
However, his idea is quickly gaining momentum, with several other House members quickly warming up to the idea.
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) stated, “We know how to arrest people.
“And if we need to arrest someone, the [House] sergeant-at-arms will know how to do it.
“I’m not afraid of that.”
Pelosi Not Ready
While Cohen and other House members are pushing to get Barr in cuffs, this is not something House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) appears to be ready to do just yet.
When Barr made his quip to Pelosi, she reportedly laughed it off.
She was also seen shaking hands with President Trump, even though the two have been at each other’s throats, at least publicly.
Regarding dragging Barr across D.C. in cuffs, Pelosi stated, “We do have a jail in the basement of the Capitol, but if were arresting all of the people in the administration, we would have on overcrowded jail situation, and I’m not for that.”
The Trump administration has called Pelosi on several bluffs already, and she appears to have blinked virtually every time.
Pelosi may be great at political theater, but she is being beaten in the trenches where it really matters.
She can get on the soapbox and say whatever she wants but deep down, she knows she has no case and if they act on these threats, the entire party is going to look like a bunch of clowns.
