Trump Hits Back at Carter Allegations He is an ‘Illegitimate’ President

On Friday, former President Jimmy Carter was appearing at a forum in Virginia when he openly stated Trump is an illegitimate president because Russia worked on his behalf to get him elected.

Earlier today, while addressing the media at the G20 conference Trump issued his response.

Trump stated, “He’s a nice man, he was a terrible president.

“He’s a Democrat and it’s a typical talking point.”

Stern, but Still Nice

In the article I wrote yesterday about the statement by Carter (you can read the full article here), I noted that Trump and Carter have actually had a very good relationship to this point.

While Carter is widely considered to be one of the worst presidents of modern times, he is still a skilled diplomat and well-respected among his peers.

That would currently include Donald Trump.

The fact Trump hit him back so mildly is proof positive of that.

Time to Let It Go

Having said that, it is time for Democrats to let this narrative go, especially when Trump is abroad at conferences such as this.

Pelosi recently stated it is her custom to not sling mud while she is on foreign soil.

That same courtesy should be extended when Trump is doing business on behalf of the United States abroad.

This is a major conference where Trump will be sitting across the table with other leaders and representatives from their respective countries.

The last thing he needs is to face questions such as this.

It undermines his position as our most powerful elected representative and can work to cast doubt by other countries who may be sheepish about negotiating with Trump, uncertain of his future.

It is unlikely Carter will get another free pass if he tries to go after Trump like this again on a narrative that is, quite frankly, tired and played out.
