President Trump Issues Deadline to Mexico for Border Shutdown

President Trump has formally set a deadline for Mexico to get its act together.

Trump stated, “We’re going to give them a one-year warning and if the drugs don’t stop or largely stop, we’re going to put tariffs on Mexico and products, in particular, cars. And if that doesn’t stop the drugs, we close the border.”

Easing Tensions

The announcement by Trump and his one-year warning should ease tensions on the Hill.

Several Republican politicians, most notably Senator Cruz (R-TX), have come out against a border closure.

Cruz recently stated that he could not support a border closing due to the local businesses it would impact in Texas.

Unfortunately, people like Cruz are in a no-win situation.

In order to be re-elected, Cruz must support the businesses and interests in his home state.

However, in this case, doing so potentially puts all Americans at risk.

With Trump giving adequate notice, Congress now has more than enough time to come up with potential aid packages as well as support to get this problem fixed ASAP.

Hit Them Where It Hurts

The news of Trump threatening massive tariffs on cars will surely get the attention of Mexico leadership.

Now, the reaction of Mexico will play a large part in how this entire problem moves forward.

If Mexico accepts responsibility for the problem and works with the United States on fixing the problem, it will be great for both countries.

If, however, we get into Mexico’s president making threats to protect his manhood, President Lopez Obrador is going to have some serious problems on his hands.

We all know how temperamental Trump can be, so it would not be surprising to see that deadline gets moved up significantly if Mexico decides to posture.

Regardless, the media and the country now know Mexico has one year to work with the United States to get this done.

For our country, it is far less costly on several fronts if we fix this issue in Mexico rather than take the most drastic measures necessary to control both immigration and the flow of drugs.

For all of our sakes, let’s hope Mexico leadership realizes that.
